Short Profile:

Dr. Shilpa Sumant is the sub editor in the Department of Sanskrit and Lexicography at Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune. She is been in the teaching field for last twenty-two years in renowned institutions in Pune. She has completed her Masters and PhD with Vedic Studies as the field of specialization. The topic of her Doctoral thesis is ‘Vivāha: The development of ritual from Saṃhitā to Prayoga in the Atharvaveda Tradition.’ which she has completed under the guidance of Prof. Shrikant S. Bahulkar from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune. As her field of specialization suggests, she has a keen interest in the Vedic studies. She has written a book in Marathi, Ṛgvedasūktāni: ṚgvedātīlNivḍakSūktāncāSaṃhitā, Padapāṭha, SāyaṇabhāṣyamAnvayyāsahaMarāṭhīAnuvād, which is specifically dedicated to the selected hymns from Ṛgveda. She has also written the introduction for the book, Domestic Rituals of the Atharvaveda in the Paippalāda Tradition of Orissa: Śrīdhara’sVivāhādikarmapañjikā, Volume 1, along with Arlo Griffiths. She has also written an Electronic Text of Atharvavidhikathana (Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, Adhyāya 2.127) for Gretil. She was the Sectional President for the Veda and Avesta section of the 11th session of the Brihan Maharashtra Prachyavidya Parishad at Amravati, Maharashtra, during 10-12 December 2015. She has 42 articles published with 9 reviews as well. She has participated in 44 national and international conferences and symposia and has delivered 15 invited lectures in India and abroad. She was awarded with the Gonda Fellowship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science two times in 2008 and 2015 for six months’ stay in the Netherlands to carry out research. For academic work, apart from the Netherlands, she has visited Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Romania, Indonesia, Austria, Belgium, Sri Lanka and Canada.
